Addressing Grief and Trauma After a Suicide
Tackling the Crisis of Suicide with a Focus on Postvention in the Workplace
Vermont consistently has the highest suicide rate among the northeastern states, and a group of experts at Howard Center and the Center for Health and Learning have partnered to help address the issue.
With funding from the Vermont Community Foundation, the two organizations created informational materials designed for use by employers to introduce suicide postvention messaging through employee manuals, orientations, and staff trainings. Postvention is support provided after a suicide to facilitate healing from grief and distress, mitigate the negative effects of exposure to suicide, and to prevent suicide among those who are at high risk.
The employer-focused effort aims to prevent suicide by raising awareness through workplace cultures, and to prepare organizations to act in the event of a tragedy. The materials are free to Vermont businesses and available at howardcenter.org/suicide-prevention. Read more…
