Emergency and Crisis Stabilization Services

Our Emergency Services team provides prompt support for individuals facing psychiatric, emotional, or behavioral health emergencies. We assist adults, youth, and families who need help right away.

Walk-in services provide immediate access to screening, assessment, and referrals for individuals experiencing acute symptoms or emotional distress. No appointment is needed.

Enhanced Mobile Crisis Response

NCSS offers Enhanced Mobile Crisis Response services through a two-person multidisciplinary team that provides support wherever a crisis occurs—at home, school, work, or in the community.

Our team members meet individuals in a safe and agreed-upon location, offering real-time assistance, emotional support, and stabilization. This statewide program includes short-term follow-up care to ensure ongoing safety and connection to resources.

New Connections – Support for Families and Youth

As part of our Enhanced Mobile Crisis services, New Connections provides 24/7 help for families with children experiencing behavioral or emotional crises—or for youth at risk of running away.
Services include:

  • Emergency family mediation
  • De-escalation and stabilization planning
  • Phone or in-person support as appropriate

Tomlinson Center – Short-Term Crisis Stabilization

The Tomlinson Center is a two-bed, short-term residential program for adults experiencing emotional or mental health concerns. The goal is to prevent hospitalization or support a safe transition home following an inpatient stay.

Residents receive individualized, therapeutic support in a comfortable and secure environment, with staff available 24 hours a day.
Services may include:

  • Counseling and daily support
  • Medication monitoring
  • Recovery planning and coordination of community-based care

Embedded Crisis Specialists

NCSS partners closely with local law enforcement, including the St. Albans Police Department and Vermont State Police, to ensure mental health expertise is available during emergency responses.

Our embedded crisis clinicians ride along with officers and provide:

  • On-scene emotional support
  • Real-time assessment and safety planning
  • Referrals to ongoing mental health services
  • Follow-up coordination to ensure continued care

This collaboration ensures that community members in distress receive compassionate, trauma-informed care during critical moments.
