Save the date
\nfor the second annual Autism Walk of Northwestern Vermont, organized by
\nNorthwestern Counseling & Support Services (NCSS) on Sunday, May 17, 2015
\nat the Collins Perley Sports & Fitness Center – 890 Fairfax Road in St.
\nAlbans, VT.  The walk will be held rain or shine: in the event of
\nunfavorable weather, this event will be moved indoors.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

The
\nAutism Walk of Northwestern Vermont is a one mile walk in which anyone can
\nparticipate without special training including, children, young adults and
\nadults diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), family members, friends,
\nhealthcare professionals, corporate teams and members of the community – all
\nare welcome!  <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

The walk promotes the rights of individuals with autism and
\nencourages respect for their differences.  Today, one in 68 children and 1
\nin 42 boys, are diagnosed with ASD, according to the Centers for Disease
\nControl.  Autism is the fastest growing serious developmental disability
\nin the U.S. <\/span> <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\nfamily, friends, co-workers, class members, etc. and give back to your
\ncommunity. Enjoy the beauty of a Vermont spring day while raising awareness and
\npromoting the acceptance and inclusion of people with ASD<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

About Autism Spectrum Disorders <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

What is Autism? <\/span><\/h3>\n

The
\nCDC defines ASDs as a group of developmental disabilities that can cause
\nsignificant social, communication and behavioral challenges.<\/span> <\/span>Children
\nwith autism may have a serious lifelong disability. However, with appropriate
\ntreatment and training, some children with autism can develop independence in
\ntheir lives. Parents support their children with autism in developing skills
\nthat use their strengths so they will feel good about themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n

NCSS
\nserves children and adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders<\/span><\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n

Given
\nthe sharp increase in ASDs and increased needs in the community, NCSS provides
\nwrap around services to accommodate the entire spectrum.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span>Array of Autism Programming<\/span><\/strong> <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The
\nChildren Youth & Family Services and Developmental Services (DS) Divisions
\ncollaborate to provide supports for children and families from birth to 22
\nyears old through an array of programs. After age 22 years, the adult with
\nautism will transition to other strengths based programs within the DS
\nDivision, where the unique needs of each individual are met.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

The
\nDevelopmental Services staff assists individuals to exercise their citizenship
\nin a number of ways, and NCSS has several programs for adults with autism as
\nthey transition from school-aged to adulthood, including Adult Services, Camp
\nRainbow, Employment Services, Program for Adaptive & Expressive Arts (PAEA)
\nand Shared Living Services to name a few.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Northwestern
\nCounseling & Support Services is a private, non-profit, human services
\nagency serving Franklin and Grand Isle Counties.  NCSS provides
\nintervention and support to children, adolescents, and adults with emotional
\nand behavioral problems, mental illness and developmental disabilities.<\/span><\/p>\n
